The world has never been fully created. Judaism teaches that each human being is God’s partner in the continuing work of creation, through the concept of Tikkun Olam, our responsibility to repair the world in order that it can achieve the perfection that was intended for it. In his 1967 Encyclical Populorum Progressio Pope Paul VI stated the Christian parallel to this doctrine: “Everyone who works is a creator”. Many quotations from Populorum Progressio are included in the encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Truth in Charity) published on July 7 by Pope Benedict XVI, which is the latest statement of Catholic social teaching for today.

Human work is never morally neutral. We always do it within the context of the economy of the time and place. (…)

Just as we expect a good standard of ethical practice from charities and governmental bodies, so too should we expect and demand a good standard of ethics from the businesses in which we invest. Our faith demands that we do no less as we seek to realise our commitment to one another and to our earthly home. As Pope Benedict’s Encyclical teaches corporations are just as much participants in God’s world with duties as well as rights as we are as individuals.

In 1985, long before the current economic crisis, an address was delivered in Rome on capitalism and ethics. “It is becoming an increasingly obvious fact,” said the speaker, “… that the development of economic systems which concentrate on the common good depends on a determinate ethical system…Conversely, it has also become obvious that the decline of such discipline, can also cause the laws of the market to collapse.”

The speaker was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, who has since become pope.

Benedict XVI is not (and has never claimed to be) an economics specialist; but his speech did reveal an instinctive wisdom about the capriciousness of our global economy.

Zamagni: “Fraternità, dono, reciprocità nella CiV”

Di fronte alle nuove sfide, il mero aggiornamento delle vecchie categorie di pensiero o il semplice ricorso a sia pure raffinate tecniche di decisione collettiva non servono alla bisogna. Occorre osare vie diverse: è questo in buona sostanza, l’invito accorato che ci rivolge la Caritas in Veritate.

Uno dei segni eloquenti di questo nostro tempo è quel reiterato appello all’etica che è andato sostituendo, nel corso dell’ultimo quarto di secolo, quell’altrettanto insistente appello alla politica, tipico degli anni ’60 del secolo scorso, secondo cui “tutto era politica”. Ma la convergenza sul primato dell’etica viene a cessare nel momento stesso in cui ci si pone a ragionare di questioni etiche concrete. Come aveva osservato A. Mac Intyre nel suo Dopo la virtù (1982), l’uso apodittico dei principi etici serve solo a porre fine al dialogo etico stesso. Come a dire che la convergenza, nel dibattito pubblico, sul primato dell’etica quasi mai conduce al consenso etico.
E’ questo un punto su cui il magistero di Giovanni Paolo II si è soffermato con insistenza esemplare. Nel suo discorso alle Nazioni Unite del 5 ottobre 1995, il papa aveva insistito sul punto che è possibile intendersi sulle questioni di ordine socio-politico su una base comune condivisa perché “la legge morale universale scritta nel cuore dell’uomo è quella sorte di ‘grammatica’ che serve al mondo per affrontare la discussione circa il suo stesso futuro”. La decrescita non è un valore – commento alla CiV

LO SVILUPPO E’ UNA VOCAZIONE, PAROLA DI PAPA

Un documento straordinariamente moderno e controcorrente, rispetto sia alla mentalità “mondana” sia a tanto “progressismo” cattolico. Stiamo parlando della nuova enciclica di Benedetto XVI, Caritas in Veritate, la prima enciclica sociale di questo pontificato, che originariamente doveva uscire in occasione del 40mo anniversario della Populorum Progressio di Paolo VI (1967).

Impossibile cogliere in poche righe tutta la ricchezza e di diversi punti toccati dall’enciclica, ma ci preme metterne in rilievo alcuni aspetti fondamentali.

1. La base di tutto è la “questione antropologica”.
